Roh Jungsug expands the traditional framework of painting by using metal.
A non-painterly medium to explore the relationship between light and material.
Through the finely abraded traces left on the surface of a steel plate, the artist creates visual illusions that shift moment by moment depending on the light and the viewer’s gaze. In this way, the hard physicality of metal is dismantled, and the flat steel plate, together with the light, acquires a virtual space and depth. The works traverse the boundary between materiality and immateriality, reality and illusion, and expand into a visual experience that is completed through the viewer’s sensory participation. Roh Jungsug’s endeavour is not only a process of broadening the conceptual horizon of painting, but also an exciting adventure in the evolution of contemporary plastic language.
